The headquarters for Gordmans is located in beautiful Omaha, Nebraska. From humble beginnings, the store has grown and now operates 66 different stores in 16 different states. Dan Gordman began his career at Bloomingdale’s in New York City. After quitting due to dissatisfaction, he headed West and ended up in Omaha when his car broke down. Here he met his future wife and began a business relationship with his future father-in-law. The father-in-law owned a store named Outfitters to the Family. His name was Sam Richman, and after a few years of Gordman’s help, the store grew and prospered. They eventually opened up a second location and changed the name of the stores to Richman Gordman.

During the 1960’s, Dan’s sons entered the business and sought to expand. This expansion took place during the 1970’s when the store grew beyond the boundaries of Nebraska. The first store to open in another state was located in Des Moines, Iowa. Another store was soon to follow, this time in Topeka, Kansas. The sons had implemented an aggressive policy of expansion that turned out to be a great success. By 1974, the chain had expanded to 10 fully operational stores throughout the midwest. They were known for bringing many innovations to the area, including the provision of shopping carts for patrons along with centralized checkout. The stores were the first to feature self service shoes and were groundbreaking in that they stayed open on Sundays. The next move was the opening of 1/2 priced stores to sell merchandise at a discount. The first of these 1/2 Price Stores was opened in 1975. The company would be running 16 of these and 16 of their departments stores by the time they were celebrating their 75th anniversary in 1990. Some economic changes forced the company to file for bankruptcy soon after but this move led to the new and improved Gordmans stores that we find today.
