Myths about Sex

The teen pregnacy thread made me think of this.

What is a myth/untruth about sex you recall hearing at some point in your life?

I am hoping to keep this light hearted.

I knew a girl who was already pregnant (by accident.. and not by me) and she told me she couldn't have sex again for fear of getting pregnant again and having twins... I tried to explain to her how twins come about but she was adamant that she could get pregnant again while she was already pregnant. (Although chances are very remote, it is possible for a woman to have twins to two different men, however, this girl was already over two months pregnant.)

Another one is when guys are scared to have sex with their pregnant partners for fear of hitting the baby in the head.

Myths

1) Condoms will protect you from all STIs. MYTH (Condoms protect you from STIs transmitted via bodily fluids, including HIV, but may not protect you from STIs transmitted via skin contact, such as HPV.)

2) Masturbation will make my penis bigger. MYTH Although it feels great to get intimate with yourself, the likelihood of your penis getting larger because of it are nil. Yes, you're stroking it, but that won't stretch it out to your liking, and even if it does, you may lose your ability to maintain a fully solid erection.

3) Masturbating will make you go blind. MYTH

If...

A women is on her period, she can't get pregnant.

A man "pulls out", she can't get pregnant.

You are a virgin, you can't get pregnant.

Condoms are 100% effective.

Birth control is 100% effective.

A few of them

You can't get pregnant if you do it in the bathtub, hot tub, swimming pool, shower, etc. Apparently water kills the man's swimmers!! (yeah right!)

And if you don't do it in the water, girls you can avoid getting pregnant by jumping up and down afterwards! (Sure!)

Can't get pregnant the first time you have sex! (I don't know if it's a male or a female thing, either way, all you virgins out there, don't get any ideas!)

Sarran wrap works just as well as a condom!! (If it were duct tape, Red Green would be proud!)

You can't get pregnant if you have sex in certain positions. (hanging from the ceiling fan is one of them!)

Condoms are re-usable. Just turn them inside out! (it's like recycling!)

One last one...

Having sexual intercourse in the 'doggy style' position will make you pregnant with puppies. MYTH

oh gosh, this is just the tip of the iceberg...

You can not get STI's from oral sex.

Doucheing after sex: will not only keep you from getting pregnant, but also get rid of any STI's you might have just encountered.

A woman has to achieve orgasm to get pregnant.

A women also has to be in love to reach orgasm.

If those last two were true, I bet there would be a lot less pregnacies! lol

To slightly correct my first post.. is actually is possible to get pregnant a second time while already pregnant - it is called superfetation.

It is extremely rare with only 10 cases ever recorded and from what I have read, the second fertilization occurs within a few weeks of the first one.

remember years ago hearing of a young fellow who couldn't figure out how his girlfriend got pregnant because he used "a rubber". Only thing was, he thought a rubber was a rubber band and of course you know the rest of the story. I suppose he thought it would hold his "little swimmers" back???

LOL...

I don't have any "great myths" to add...but there is some pretty funny ones here already. And kind of sad in a way too! People believe the strangest things and they get into some trouble because of it. Oh...I thought of one:

You can't get pregnant while breastfeeding - MYTH

It probably helped him with retaining the little swimmers from pre-maturely coming though.

being on a cattle farm we sometimes see some rarities ... this being one. Had a first calf heifer one time pregnant with twins. Husband was totally shocked when the first calf was about 3 months premature and the second was full term. At the time even the vets said it was impossible.
And I will end it there with my comparison to cattle ... had enough of that when I was pregnant , lol.

The Time link won't work because it should have commas in the address as follows and for some reason they don't show up no matter what I do..

well

sounds like most of you have these pretty much wrapped up.

Working where i work, i've come across a lot of misunderstandings about sex, sex play, etc etc etc.

However i have to say, probably the worst myth around is the "Wear two condoms for better protection" myth. Most people have no idea how unsafe this is.

NEVER WEAR TWO CONDOMS!

Too much friction, and causes breakage.

-Having sex in the foggy style postition will definetly make you have a girl. MYTH

-Women can't get pregnant if on top, with gravity and all. MYTH.

-Women have to orgasm to get pregnant. MYTH

-Condoms are 100% effective. MYTH

-Having sex during pregnancy is totally fine. MYTH. It absolutely depends on the women. For some it can actually make them sicker or it can cause great pain.

I'm giggling like a grade 8 girl in health class!

Just to clarify... the pregnant while breastfeeding is only PARTIALLY a myth.

While many, many people DO get pregnant while nursing, if they follow the rules for LAM, or Lactational Amenorrhea Method, they only have about 1-2% chance of getting pregnant in the first 6 months postpartum.

If they follow the Seven Gold Standards of Ecological Breastfeeding, they will have about 1-2% chance of getting pregnant at 6 months, and about a 6% chance of getting pregnant after that until the return of their period (usually somewhere around 14 months postpartum.

That's about comparable to regular "combo" birth control pills (1-2% failure rate), and the mini-pill (around 8%), respectively.

A good article about LAM is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactational_amenorrhea_method

There's a whole bunch of them. Let's just say it's too late for me to try know. LOL. Is that a myth? Hell yeah.

I didn't even know sex existed until I was 15. Then all of a sudden "everything is about sex." 5 years ago by the way.

I think the purpose of this thread is to laugh at some of the myths about sex.. not to get all serious.

I heard a long time ago that a girl could get pregnant if a guy ejaculated on her leg. Apparently sperm are intelligent enough to find the target no matter where they land...

I laughed at that one.

A friend told me

If you think about your Mom while doing it, you can't get pregnant.

It may be true.

If I started thinking about my Mom while doing it, I would have no desire to continue... it would be wrong on so many levels.

So it may work.
