Arrest in Duane Lacquette homicide investigation

From this morning's BPS releases...
Just a note beforehand to bear in mind that the individual named is arrested but has yet to be tried or convicted for this crime.

--------------

On January 16th, 2010, the Brandon Police Service entered into an investigation into the death of 21 year old Duane John Lacquette, who died as a result of blunt force trauma injuries to his upper body and was discovered in the basement of a residence in the 3600 block of Centennial Boulevard in Brandon. As a result of the investigation to date, Police have arrested and charged 28 year old Jason John OUIMET, of Canadian Forces Base Shilo, Manitoba, for the second degree murder of Lacquette. The investigation has revealed that the incident was not gang or drug related and that the suspect was not well acquainted with the victim. The matter is still under investigation. Further details must be preserved to protect the integrity of the investigation, preserve evidence and protect witnesses as well as future court proceedings, in relation to this case.

Thanks Adam

I have always wondered if the other murders in Brandon resulted in an arrest? I have never heard yet.

closure

Kudos to the police. That was actually one of the first stories I heard, that is was someone from Shilo.

I hope this can bring some closure to the family.

So very glad to hear it

This also fits into the rumors I was hearing from people who were with him the last day he was seen alive. Very happy that someone has been charged in this poor boy's death. I just hope justice is fully served in this case.

CTV Winnipeg

A few more details in the CTV Winnipeg story linked below..

The suspect has been with the Canadian Forces for about a year as a gunner, said CFB Shilo spokesperson Lori Truscott. Any disciplinary action from the military is dependent on the outcome of the court trial, she said.

I think....

Let's not forget he has not been convicted and is just being held as a suspect on the homicide. Either way there should be no reason to forget all the good the CF has done for us. The media is going to blow this way out of proporton anyways but I hope people are smart enough not to buy into every rumor that is going around.

He has not been convicted of anything, but nobody until you has said anything about CF involvement in any of it. The good that CF has done for all of us has absolutely nothing to do with this case or this thread. We all know that media likes to blow stories way out of proportion, but you are the guiltiest of all because you are dragging in an element that has not been mentioned.
The suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and if proven guilty, I hope gets sentenced with the maximum.
You sir/madam quit trolling and trying to stir up s**t.
As for the future posters, don't ever mention CF in connection with this case, because it has nothing to do with it, this is just another person arrested as a suspect in a crime.

Condolences

To the Lacquette family, from the outpouring of affection from the community, he most certainly was a special soul, that will be missed. God bless.
Also, being the kind of person that so many of you hold in such high regard, I would hope that you would respect that and not carry anger in the same pocket as your sorrow, because I'm sure that the Duane that you talk about would not condone that: at least that's what I gathered.

All walks of life

are capable of committing crimes.

Duane's roommate really likes talking to the media, maybe he should just be quiet for a while.

the nature of the crime, and the fact that the police were confident enough to release his name suggests to me they have the man responsible

i hope it brings some closure for those affected.

Of course the police

Threadkiller Gen. Kooblah ret. said "the nature of the crime, and the fact that the police were confident enough to release his name suggests to me they have the man responsible

think they have the right person. If you want the police to be the ones to investigate, convict and punish, you are living in a police state. The police are not always right.

As much as I sympathize with the family of the victim, the fact we have a system means that someone is presumed to be innocent until the courts determine otherwise. My argument is that you have to respect the process even though you may not like it.

Thread

I've had to make the difficult decision of removing several comments from this thread. Most of us can't imagine the difficulty family and friends are going through right now, but we all have to try to maintain level heads in this case and allow the system to do its job even if it goes contrary to our human nature. I ask all to please be patient. An arrest is the first step towards the kind of closure that all are desparately seeking and deserve, please have faith that our system will deal with this as appropriate.

Bail

CKLQ has a few more details at the link below..
- He must post a 10 thousand dollar surety and 5 thousand dollars cash.
- must remain a resident of CFB Shilo
- must report to military police every Monday
- must abstain from alcohol and anywhere that sells it
- is not allowed to contact specific people

Next court date is March 8

I suspect that we're about to hear some very strong opinions on this issue. A reminder when sharing those opinions that this is not at this point a convincted criminal who has been established to have committed this crime.

Here are two links that may help us understand the bail process and surety:

there is one good thing to this

If he's out on bail i don't believe he gets double time credit for time served before being sentenced.
